Bathers Library Newsletter #16

Cohorts Season One Show, Minimag Submissions, Reading Groups, Poetics + Plant Medicine, Black Hole Cinematheque ,Learning by Hand and MORE!!!

Y’all! I know I always say this but there is WAY TOO MUCH going on! This late winter has been absolutely going wild at Bathers—we have a ton of rad community events coming up and some updated ways to plug in!

One thing to note—our storefront hours are shifting this month. We’ll be open this Friday 12-5 (though kind of in install mode), and then (aside from events) we’ll be in the space Fridays and Saturdays 12-6 during March. We’re working on getting the space open more regularly for community use—stay tuned for updates on that soon!

COHORTS SEASON 1 SHOW RECEPTION 3/13

We love Cohorts! Cohorts is our artist exchange program, inviting artists, writers, performers, etc to gather regularly to share and critique one another’s work, to read together, participate in regular events related to their field, and attend guest artist talks. This season is wrapping up now—so we’re celebrating with some of the artists who were part of it!—and we’re getting ready to launch a new season. If you’re interested in becoming a facilitator, fill out this form and we’ll follow up! Either way, see you at the reception March 13th!

Announcing our first program in partnership with Learning By Hand!

The Ecological Restoration Reading Group is a shared journey through the web of interdependence, weaving together humans, plants, animals, fungi, water, soil, bugs & the resulting trophic cascades caused by ecosystem degradation & the possibility of repair through restoration.

Over the course of four weeks of reading & meeting, we will explore how humans can (& must) play a role in the restoration of depleted lands & watersheds, integrating observation, design, engineering, brawn & creative thinking into a cohesive strategy for healing the ecologies we depend on.

We will spend time discussing the basic methods of low-tech process-based restoration and learning from local & regional leaders in this work. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss themes & methods, ask questions of two guest speakers, & learn about upcoming opportunities to do restoration work.

Cost: $30 / fees go to paying guest speakers + facilitators
A few free spaces available, message @learningbyhand to request a space.
Sundays
March: 22nd & 29th
April: 5th & 12th

Learning By Hand hosts accessible, practical workshops, offsites & experiences for everyone. We specialize in small, hands-on, in-person gatherings that support local artists, educators, activists, craftspeople & anyone passionate about learning new skills. At LBH, we believe that learning with a community rooted in personal expression & liberation is the key to building collective resilience.

Submit to the minimag!

Our minimag features essays, interviews, art and events from our community (that means you!) it is designed and edited by Bathers Library volunteers, printed on our riso and handed out for free!

Propose a Reading Group for Spring

Proposals are open for Spring Reading Groups! Bathers Library Reading Groups are like brief, thematic book clubs created by our community. Reading groups can be based on a topic, theme, author, or whatever other interesting organizing principle you'd like to suggest. Reading groups should be structured to last about 6 weeks, and to be able to have between 8-15 or so people. You don’t need to be an expert! Learn and share and grow together!
