Bathers Library Newsletter #17

Library open hours, birding at Lake Merritt, new Cohorts and new Reading Groups!

Hello friends! It is literally April! And the library is popping off. We are launching our Spring/Summer Reading Groups this week AND our second round of artist critique and community Cohorts! The shop will be closed this Friday (Justin’s out of town) but back again Sunday for open library hours, and regularly scheduled programming next week. We have a ton of rad things coming up, so let’s get into it!

First off—thanks to our volunteer library organizing group, we are hosting regular library hours every Sunday from 12-3pm! Come hang out, browse the library (no check outs yet, but we’re getting there!), bring a creative project or something you’ve been meaning to work on. We’ll make coffee and tea. Everyone’s welcome! Come say hey!

We are so pumped to collaborate on this birding workshop with Learning by Hand, QTPOC Birders, Birding For Everyone, and Oliver James! Tickets are limited. $75-$100 (NOTAFLOF). Find out more and sign up here!

Join Cohorts Season Two

We are doing it again!!! We’re bringing back Cohorts for a new and improved Season Two! If you’re not familiar with our last season—the idea is Cohorts are genre-based artist critique groups that gather regularly to share work, maybe generate work, and to also share in events and community with each other! We have about 11 open Cohorts this season in Visual Art, Writing, Design and more. Thanks a zillion to our group of amazing facilitators for working to put this all together!

Spring/Summer Reading Groups

AND we have a new set of Reading Groups!! Reading Groups are the best—if you haven’t been a part of one yet—what are you doing? This season, we have a TON of brilliant groups on the role of water in Asian (American) literature, experimenting with Black temporality, getting “horny on main”, Proustian infatuation, Gay literature before AIDS, active listening, psychogeography and more! Thank you to all our amazing facilitators for putting these groups together! Groups tend to be about 8-15 people, meet weekly (mostly at Bathers, but some are offsite/online). A few groups will start mid-April, another few mid-May, and then another-another few in mid-June. Get into it!

Mini Mag Party April 9th

Come to our mini-mag release, April 9th at 7pm! We are excited to celebrate our brand new April mini-mag, edited and designed by our Riso/Publications organizing group! This issue looks amazing, and is full of amazing writing from our community, and not one, not two, but three calendars of rad bay area art events! Thanks to Adrian, Delilah, Moe and Mulu for editing and designing this! And to all the folks who contributed work. Come out Thursday and pick up your (free) copy and meet some of the folks behind the issue!

Coming soon:

Okay, that’s all! Our storefront is still going through a bit of a redesign. Generally we’re open on Fridays and during events for shopping. You can also support the space by ordering from our site! Thanks everyone! Excited to see y’all around the space soon!
