Bathers Library Newsletter #5

Memberships, Meetings, Plays, Poets, Foragers, Figures

Y’all! The theme of this month’s newsletter is “ways to get involved.” Or maybe “too much all at once!” There is already so much going on in the space and I’m excited to share what’s been happening, and what’s coming up—but first I want to share some ways to support and be a part of the ever-evolving experience, we call Bathers Library.

I soft-launched some of this at the Bathers Open House last month (which was so fun, by the way) and I’m excited to share it here in a slightly more official capacity with y’all. Brevity is definitely not my strong point, but I will try my best to keep this as short as I can.

I’m excited to launch two new more “official” ways to get involved with the library. One will be the official launch of Memberships! The idea is that not only will being a member give you access to the library as a reading space and resource, you’ll also be able to meaningfully guide and contribute to the programming, mission and direction of the space. Here’s the rundown:

MEMBERSHIPS

All members (at any level, starting with the “Mini” at $10/month) will get discounts in the store, and have access to the library during open hours (Thurs-Sat, 12-6pm) as a reading room, workspace and circulating library of art and film books. I am hoping to expand those hours as time goes on, but that’s the capacity I have right now.

All members will also be invited to member-only social events and to Bathers planning meetings (once a month), where we will program events, screenings, performances, readings, workshops, and more.

Members at the “Reg” level ($20/month) will also get discounts on events and classes, and expanded access to our (soon-to-be-functional I swear!) Risograph for all your print needs.

The highest tier right now is called “Full” (at $75/month) and will include all the lower-level benefits plus 24 hour access to the space as a work and meeting space, unlimited printing (bring your own paper), and opportunity to schedule private events in the space (subject to availability w/public programs). It’s kind of like a flexible studio or office space with opportunities to host events and gatherings. This will be limited to 12 folks to start. Fill out this interest form and I’ll reach out with next steps!

VOLUNTEER

If becoming a member is not really where you’re at right now, please consider volunteering! I need all the help I can get organizing books and helping to facilitate events and workshops. Regular volunteers will also be able to join member meetings and social events, in addition to attending events for free.

JOIN THE “DISASTER” READING GROUP FACILITATED BY KELLY PENDERGRAST

Disasters are inherently political. They are also increasing in frequency and devastation. As we saw with the recent fires in Los Angeles and extreme flooding in the Southeast, official responses to disaster range from heroic but underfunded to active abandonment. So what are we to do now, knowing that no one is coming to save us? Let’s figure it out. In this group, we will read and discuss a range of texts to help us understand the ways disasters and disaster response are experienced and exploited. We will also undertake practical activities, sometimes with the help of guests, to help us better prepare ourselves and our communities. Soup provided.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR
Kelly Pendergrast is a writer and researcher from New Zealand, living in Oakland. She writes about technology, aesthetics, and material culture, and runs a small strategy and writing consultancy with her sister Anna Pendergrast. She is also a volunteer in the womenswear department at the Oakland Museum White Elephant Sale (Northern California’s biggest rummage sale).

$30 participation fee goes to the facilitator, guest speakers and keeping the space open. There are a limited number of free spots available. Respond to this message to request a spot!

UPCOMING EVENTS

(Offsite!)

NEWS (What just happened!)

Last week, we launched our latest publication, “The Infinite Play” by Alexandra Pink at Green Apple Books on the Park with a live performance of (a version of) the play, directed by Alexandra. Thanks to Kar at Green Apple, and to everyone who came out, and especially to all the actors who brought the play to life! Here are a few photos courtesy of Graham Holoch of the performance and Q&A. Copies of the play are available in the shop or on the site!

We also hosted a rad full-house poetry reading (the first in the space!) featuring a ton of rad readers. Pictured below is Misha Crafts blowing all of our minds!

And, we also hosted a rad drawing night facilitated by Naira Diptee, and featuring an amazing model, Bubbles (pictured below). We’ll be doing these events regularly. Stay tuned for upcoming dates.

AND THAT’S IT!

As always, a great way to support the project is to come pick up some books at our storefront (Thursday-Saturday 12-6) or shop our publications and shirts online! Thanks y’all! Excited to see ya soon!
