Bathers Library Newsletter #8
Radio for emergencies, Riso exquisite corpse, Leena Joshi in the window, and more!
Hello all! Welcome to the late-April edition of the Bathers Library Newsletter! April was such a rad month at the library—we hosted some incredible events (see photo above of the crowd at Malcolm Harris’s talk organized in conjunction with our Disaster Reading Group) as well as a very fun library organizing party (see below). And we kicked off signups for our Spring/Summer Reading groups (it’s not too late to sign up!)

We also released our first reading group syllabus-zine, “What Are Meetings?” by Danny Spitzberg (order here) and our first thematic reading list by writer and library volunteer, Ana Tuazon on the histories of environmental activism in the Bay and beyond. Pick up a copy of Ana’s introductory text and check out her selections next time you’re in the shop.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Join us Friday from 5-8pm for the opening of our artist resident, Leena Joshi’s window installation. Leena will also have prints on hand for sale and for freeziees!

Learn how radio can be part of your emergency preparedness plan. This ranges from small scale emergencies (e.g. no cell service in the woods, or doing comms for medics at an event/action) to large scale disasters (e.g. wildfires and earthquakes). We will also cover Meshtastic as an alternative to text messaging by cell phone.
The Lefty Radio League is a local group that runs trainings and build nights for leftists to learn radio for fun and solidarity in the event of natural or man-made disasters.

Join artist Rena Tom for an evening that combines exquisite corpse and Risograph printmaking. No artistic skills necessary. Each participant will leave with a copy of the collaborative print produced in the workshop. Feel free to bring collage materials if you have any!

This workshop will explore fundamental techniques that anyone can use to acquire drawing skill. Each class will focus on one technique: line, proportion, and value. We will also talk about tricks and shortcuts for improving your drawings quickly. In class, we will do exercises and draw from photos and still life. No experience required, all skill levels welcome!
COME SEE US IN LOS ANGELES

Join us at the LA Art Book Fair, May 15-18 at ArtCenter College of Design. We’ll have Bathers Library merch; artist games from Alexandra Pink, Helen Shewolfe Tseng, Gabriel Garza, Sappho Bootlegs, Helen Ip, Amy Langer, and Tracy Ren; Ana Tuazon’s Earth Day reading list; and Danny Spitzberg’s “What Are Meetings?” zine… and some new exciting projects still in the works! Tell your LA friends to come say hey!
THAT’S IT!
Hope to see you around soon!
